Roe, Eui-Woong, Director of Fine Arts College in Honam University
All the art works of Jung, Gwang-Woong come with my lost and old happy memories. In his every work, his color and tone passes with conviction through canvas sometimes with rough and strong touch of the white and the blue, sometimes with daring simplification of the objects. All his art pieces approach me with the feeling of a little young boy full of purity in my childhood. The imaginary boy in his works are all the time naive, worldly-dirt free and non-superfluous one: a perfectly matched image with the word, Aesthetic Freedom. So I can say clearly Jung, Gwang-Woong is reallyfree and never chained to the ordinary fixed idea, namely beyond our time and imagination in his arts.
Gwang-Woong's works apparently comes to me with the impression in which his art philosophy stands strongly with the reality and acute reason. However, in the other way around, his works send out the reflections and memories toward somewhere. I guess that the reason is that Jung, Gwang-Woong is trying to move his happy days with his home-town of Gwang-ju in his canvas. He might want to keep those young childhood memories for his life and his art works. His art pieces are full of his good feelings about nature and his childhood there.
The real fine artist of contemporary, Jung, Gwang-Woong, he flies cotton clouds of the home town in his canvas margin, draws some lonely humble cottages with simplified touch. And also he tries to show a sweet spring breeze there. I strongly believe that he now show us a real imaginary paradise with his own favorite objects. If you confront his works, you will get a lot of sweet stories and good memories hidden there which you forgot long time ago: the stories about your home town, and the memories about your childhood and your old friends. His works are full of the sweet, fresh smell of spring and summer and warm-hearted stories of our past and of the nature.
I think that the painting is another nature created by the artist's view and heart. Jung, Gwang-Woong has re-created another nature with his own eyes and thought. What we appreciate him is that he never ceases his efforts to build up his aesthetic world by using the nature as artistic motives. Further to this, he pursues to put our dream, love and truth in his works. Specially he likes the blue mountains, clouds, simplified thatched houses as his art motives, and he knows how to use those things. He knows how to find his own color, and can use his own imagination to describe what he wants. It means that he has more than enough professional capacity of his unique interpretation on the nature, so it is natural we feel a lot of attractiveness and charm through his works. I notice also that he can enjoy his full freedom at the work because he has happy and old memories as his precious assets
The excellent things on his works can be described with three simple words: Calmness, Constraints, Harmony. In his works, all small and big objects do not self-conflict, in the contrary, they are well harmonized and balanced.
My general impression on his works in Jung, Gwang-Woong Exhibition is that he has caught our dream from the nature with his sharp views and esthetic senses and that he has re-formulated excellently on canvas with artistic balance and professionalism. His works have been born by his elaborate logics and composing ability, not by the accidental findings or effects. So that is the reason why Jung, Gwang-Woong's art works keeps the consistency and artistic value.
On the occasion of this exhibition, I sincerely wish that his realm of artistic world will grow further.
